SlutWalk is about ending sexual violence, but it’s also about prejudice and snap judgments. It’s about using words that don’t exactly have a clear definition as a way to make other people feel inferior, as if they have no value, and afraid to be themselves.
Language is powerful—insults can (and do) silence many. Just think of all the kids who commit suicide because of bullying. Those are voices that will never be heard, stories that will never be told.
We want Kansas City’s SlutWalk to be the beginning to the end of silence. There will be official speakers at the event, but perhaps more important will be the murmur of people sharing their personal stories with each other as they walk side by side, united in setting free the words that had once been secrets. The formerly voiceless will be heard.
Together, our whispers of long-buried fear and shame and pain will turn into triumphant shouts that, sooner or later, will change the world.
