hell. to. the. fucking. yes.
NO ONE deserves to be assaulted or raped.
NO ONE deserves to feel alone or scared or sad.
the people who get assaulted, raped, molested, abused—NO ONE has the right to tell them it was THEIR FAULT, no matter the situation.Because it wasn’t. I don’t care how you looked or how drunk you were or how far you’d been happy and enthusiastically going with that person—there is a line, a line called consent, and the other person crossed it. Crossed your boundary.NO ONE has the right to do that.
And then to tell you that it was your fault for whatever reason?
When the lovely Alex Kelly inspired me to start this and the amazing Nefertiti knew how to make it happen and Emily (that’s me, the first person pronoun throughout this post) created the blog—Are You Doing It Wrong? might have started as consent education, but the more research I do so I can truly educate people as to the meaning of consent, the more I learn about rape culture. Slut shaming. Victim blaming. And I realize.. we’re evolving. Are You Doing It Wrong? is evolving.
If sex isn’t consensual, you’re doing it wrong. But you’re also doing it wrong if you make light of rape (using the word to mean anything other than what it really is—a traumatic sexual event). If you take part in slut-shaming or victim-blaming, you’re doing it wrong then, too.Or if you believe that rape/sexual assault/etc. is a crime done only by men only to women and that’s the sort of awareness you’re trying to raise… you’re so doing it wrong.
Yes, Are You Doing It Wrong? is evolving, or maybe just what I want it to be. Because since we launched this blog in November, I’m realizing that maybe consent education isn’t enough.I’m realizing that probably we need a revolution.
